How to Prevent Fatty Liver

One cause of fatty liver is alcohol consumption. If fatty liver is due to alcohol consumption, the road to a healthier liver begins with you making that step to alcohol abstinence.  You must stop consuming alcohol. Some people can stop ‘cold turkey”. Other persons may need the help of professionals who sometimes uses herbal remedies or other products to assist them in quitting the habit. If you are using other products to assist you in breaking the habit, the key is not to use something to resolve the issue that will eventually cause another health problem. For example, do not consume a product that may have you becoming addicted to that product.
So, you have made the bold step to stop consuming alcohol.  Here are some other self-care steps you must commit to taking to ditch the habit of alcohol consumption for good.

1.     If your friends are avid alcohol drinkers, you need to change them. Surround yourself with friends who don’t abuse alcohol or who will not consume alcohol in your presence.
2.     Avoid visiting places where alcohol is available and remove all alcohol from your house.
3.     Constantly remind yourself of the negative effect of alcohol-induced fatty liver. (Hopefully you have memorized all the important points regarding the negative effects of fatty liver. These are documented in the previous newsletter.) Focus your attention on your determination to create a healthier you. Make a list of all the benefits you will receive when you maintain good health. Here are some health benefits, reduced risk of chronic disease, improved mental health, improved physical health (stronger bones and muscles), increased energy levels, reduction in fatigue, and improved quality of life (you have the energy to enjoy your hobbies and other activities and to enrich your relationships, as well as play with your children).
4.     Learn how to cope with stress and relax without the use of alcohol. For example, meditate, do deep breathing, stretch, listen to music, keep a journal, or connect with people who really care about you.
5.     Live a purpose-driven life. This requires identifying your core values and setting meaningful goals that are in alignment with those values.
6.     Learn to embrace failures, setbacks and challenges as a part of life. Failures, setbacks and challenges happen to everyone. While your situation may be unique, no one is immune from these three.
7.     Engage in community living and give back to the society. Volunteer, mentor or give to those in need.

SelfCare Weekly Self-development Sayings

Owning your emotional health means owning how you think, feel and respond to situations. This week we focus on some situations in which silence is the appropriate response.

Keep silent:

  • When you are angry.  There is the tendency to say things you may regret when you are angry.
  • When someone needs to be heard.  In this case, do not reprimand, praise or offer solutions. Simply listen.
  • When you are being disrespected or criticized by others. You may regret having said something.
  • When you don’t have all the facts.
  • When it is someone else’s time to speak.
  • When speaking may make a situation worse.
  • If you are about to make a promise you know you cannot keep.
  • When you are not emotionally grounded.
  • When your silence will leave a positive impression.
